Community Day promotes re-formed League

On Sunday Spennithorne and Harmby were the hosts as young players from the area came together as part of the McDonalds FA Community Football Day....

The event was put in place to promote and raise awareness for the newly branded Hambleton & Richmondshire Junior Football League, formerly known as the Wensleydale Junior Football League.

Five teams participated in the event, which took place on Sunday 2nd August, with Richmond, Northallerton, Bedale and Hambleton joining hosts Spennithorne & Harmby. The morning-long event, played out against the backdrop of the Yorkshire Dales, saw the young players participate in small games, fun obstacle courses and challenges.

Young referees Joe Ramsey, Adam Walker and Thomas Gilroy deserve a special mention for volunteering at the event. It was the first time the three teenagers had put the whistle to their mouths.

The league will hopefully benefit from the event as the it looks to grow and develop, with the hope of gaining new teams, volunteers and players now a more realistic and achievable goal.

The league re-brand has taken place to better reflect the location of the teams in the area. Len Scott has taken over the role of league chairman, with David Williams acting as a vice-chairman. The rules have also been looked at and improved by Les Sutton, with new sponsorship also being introduced courtesy of Cecil M.Yuill.

Beginning on the 13th September, the league will break for Futsal in December, before returning to games in the spring. The unique structure is proposed to re-introduce Under 16’s football to bridge the vital gap between the junior and adult.

With the new season fast approaching, the work done to develop and promote the league will continue. Boys and girls across the area of North Yorkshire have the opportunity to participate in a fun, friendly and competitive league, which, thanks to the community day, is only going to develop further.
