Scarborough & District FATeams needed for Under 10s Girls' League
Wednesday, 30 April 2008.
The Scarborough and District FA are calling for girls to get on their kits and form a team to play in the new Under 10s League in Scarborough and the surrounding area.
At present there are limited opportunities for girls to play football in the area and the Scarborough and District FA, supported by the North Riding County FA are starting an under 10 girl’s league for the new season, 2008/2009.
Yet, for a league to exist there needs to be teams, so the North Riding County FA are offering help for anyone who wants to set up a girl’s team to be part of the league. Aside from the direct benefits they are offering – such as a free Level 1 coaching course and a brand new strip – running a team has many personal rewards.
Trevor Wing, Secretary and Coach of Middlesbrough Ladies FC, has gained a lot of satisfaction from working with girls’ football for over 20 years as a referee and a coach. “Being involved with the girls from a young age through to senior level and seeing that girls can develop into good footballers is very satisfying as a coach.”
Women’s and girl’s football is the largest female participation sport in the country with over 250,000 women and 1.1 million girls playing some form of the game. The national team, coached by Hope Powell, reached the quarter final of the World Cup last year, losing only to World number 1, USA and are currently embarking on a campaign to qualify for EURO 2009.
The proposed Scarborough U10s Girls League could be a direct route to the top and will give girls of all ages the opportunity to play football over the coming years. It is proposed that the league will grow to include U10, U12, U14 and U16 within five years.
It really is easy to start a new team; all you will need is a coach, a strip, balls, cones and bibs, players, a referee and a league to play in – all of which could be funded by the county FA!
North Riding County FA will offer any new teams the following, worth £460.
• One free place on a Level 1 course of your choice for a female volunteer
• One free place for a female volunteer on a referees course
• Free bibs cones and balls to the value of £80
• Brand new Umbro strip worth £250
• Free affiliation to the league and North Riding County FA
What’s more, there is funding of up to £10,000 available from the Football Foundation to allow the club to grow and NRCFA will offer support to anyone who wants to apply.
So, if you are interested in starting up a girls team to enter into the Scarborough and District Under 10s league – the format of which will be up to the member clubs – then send an expression of interest to Emily Toase, Women and Girl’s Football Development Officer, at Emily.Toase@northridingfa.com or call her on (01642) 717774
