Why would anyone want to be a referee?
When asked this question most prospective referee's give the following answers.
I can't play for my team due to injury or too old but I want to remain involved in the game or.
I wasn't much good as a player but I wanted to still be actively involved in the game or.
I'm involved in running a side but often we do not get an official referee. I help out when this happens and I simply want to learn more..
Of course it is quite clear that all the people above love the game and want to remain involved in some capacity. Many local Leagues are short of referees and the NRCFA has an on-going programme in place to recruit, train and retain referees once they are qualified.
Courses and application forms
You can apply on our website, please click here or alternatively complete the attached application form and return it to our Offices in Stokesey with a cheque / postal order for the correct amount (PLEASE DO NOT SEND CASH THROUGH THE POST).
What do the courses involve?
North Riding County FA accredited instructors lead our courses which are organised in the following manner:-
11-a-side Practical Referees Course:- This course is normally run over 1 weekend (8 hours each day) plus 1 evening session prior to the weekend session. Examinations are taken during the weekend.
On passing the exams, you become Level 9 Trainee referee. You will then have to referee 6 matches of 11-a-side football. During this period you will be assigned a mentor to assist and offer advice. On completion of your 6 matches you have to attend a training seminar (Module 5 Workshop). Once all this criteria is complete and if you are successful, you will be presented with your registration certificate and become a registered referee. If you are under 16 years of age, you will become a Level 8 referee and if you are over 16 years of age a Level 7 referee. You may then officiate on local amateur ("parks") football. (Although under 16's cannot officiate at adult football level until they have reached their 16th birthday). When you reach the age of 16 you automatically become a Level 7 referee.
If you wish to become a Level 6 referee you must serve one year at Level 7 before being eligible for promotion. Promotion is usually decided through assessment, attendance at further training, successful completion of a test on the Laws of the game and a satisfactory average mark over 20 completed matches. The same criteria would apply for promotion to Level 5. It is the individual referees responsibility to apply for promotion via the registration form which is sent to all registered referees towards the end of each season.
Promotion above level 5 is determined by further assessment, interviews, fitness test and successfully meeting the criteria laid down will enable you to officiate at games of a much higher level, but it is the starting point for all referees, even those who are now at the very top.
Match Day Skills Workshop:- This workshop does not provide a formal qualification but outlines the basic skills needed to facilitate a game of 11v11 football when there is no officially appointed referee. It gives people within clubs some knowledge of the Laws to enable them to referee games when there is no one else. All candidates will receive a certificate of attendance.
There are also local based Referee's Associations where referees meet on a regular basis throughout the year to discuss current issues, socialise and help and encourage each other to develop and improve their skills in order to reach their full potential.
NOTE:- All candidates who wish to register as a referee must attend a Safeguarding Children Workshop and, if over 16 years of age, complete an FA CRB check.
