Development - take your skills to the next level

One Day Technique and Skills Course

The FA’s One Day Technique and Skills Module is aimed at Grassroots coaches and Primary School Teachers who wish to gain a better understanding of working with 5-11 year old players. It is proposed that this course will form part of the revised Charter Standard Club criteria when it is launched.

Encouraging those who work with players in the 5-11 age bracket to follow a more creative and adaptable approach to skill development, rather than traditional routine methods, is one of the challenges faced by FA Regional Coach Development Manager (5-11) John Grifiths when delivering the FREE (CS Clubs)  pilot course on Saturday 23rd February 2008.

The six hour course will provide an insight into the ‘What’ and ‘How’ of developing skill with young players. The latest theories behind facilitating skill learning, the importance of fundamental movements and how to bring these aspects together to adapt and create age appropriate coaching practices made up the focus of the day.

Fundamental

The course will reference The FA’s 4 Corner and Long Term Player Development model, which outlined the importance that coaches have of meeting the needs of individuals by accommodating for unique learning styles and specific stages of development.

Coupled with the idea that children simply don’t have the capabilities to copy most adult demonstrations illuminated the fact that a player's journey towards skill acquisition is a hugely complex process, made up of a multitude of contributing aspects and developmental phases.
